Om professor Snead
Malcolm L. Snead is BS, DDS, PhD, Professor and Division Chair, Biomedical Sciences, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC, University of Southern California, USA.
He is interested in developmental biology and the molecular continuation between an altered developmental pathways and the development of a disease state. For similar reasons of relatedness, he pursues cell renewal and regeneration based on principals gleaned from developmental. His other major research interests lie in the area of biomineralization, where he is interested in the role of protein-to-protein interactions that guide the assembly of an extracellular matrix that is competent to direct mineral deposition. He is working towards understanding the formation of the dentine enamel junction using genetic approaches. Finally, Dr. Snead is interested in the chemical sense of taste and the role of salivary proteins in taste transduction.
He has been awarded a prestigious MERIT award to extend time in research from the NIDCR, NIH. He was awarded a Fulbright Specialist Award to work at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. Dr. Snead served as a ad hoc member of several National Institutes of Health (NIH) study section panels as well as being a chartered member of another study panel. He presently serves a member of the Council of the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).
Dr. Snead teaches in the doctoral program of the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at USC. He is among the cadre of creators for the Problem Base Learning (PBL) program. He is also appointed in other USC schools. He has served as the School’s Associate Dean for Innovation and Discovery. At the University level, he has served on the Provost’s Advisory Panel for Research Advancement, as the Chair of the University Committee on Academic Probation and Tenure and as the Co-Chair of the Academic Leadership Committee.
Snead has more than 180 publications and has collaborated with several of our Faculty’s researcher for many years.
