Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

The SEM at the EM lab is a XL30 ESEM LaB6 from Philips.

It is used to take high magnification pictures of biological samples and polymeric materials.

A back scatter detector is installed to identify foreign bodies embedded in biological samples

Elemental analysis of samples by the help of EDx is also available to analyze and quantify an elemental analysis of samples.

Biological samples

Hard dental samples, soft brain tissue, and cells

Material samples

Non-woven substrate, microporous PTFE membrane, and microporous PVF membrane, through SEM

Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDx)

The elemental analysis of samples can be accurately conducted by using EDx with the SEM:

SEM-EDx
