Workshop and Training School: 3D Organotypic Models of Oral Carcinogenesis

In collaboration with the University of Bergen, IOB successfully organized a workshop and hands-on training school on 3D Models of Oral Carcinogenesis in Norway. The workshop took place in Ustaoset from May 5th to 7th, attracting 14 participants, including PhD students and researchers from various European universities.

Six trainers – three from the Institute of Oral Biology (IOB), and three from the Gade Laboratory for Pathology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Bergen (UiB)– led the workshop.

Workshop and training school

The training school at IOB was held from May 8th to 10th, while a parallel training school took place at UiB, coordinated by Professor Daniela E. Costea.

The workshop provided theoretical insights into various types of 3D models relevant for research on oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) and oral cancer. During the hands-on training, participants received demonstrations and engaged in activities such as isolating primary cells from normal oral mucosa, as well as constructing and harvesting 3D in vitro organotypic models for studying the stepwise progression of oral carcinogenesis. Additionally, participants were trained in various downstream analysis methods, including morphometric and molecular techniques for analyzing 3D models.

"We believe that organizing this event has significantly strengthened the Institute of Oral Biology`s commitment to high-quality dental research, research training, and the development of innovative research models and tools", says Professor Dipak Sapkota.

Part of a European network – INTERCEPTOR

Professor Sapkota and Associate Professor Tine M. Søland coordinated the event at IOB. Sapkota and Søland are part of the EU COST action INTERCEPTOR, a European network focused on advancing oral cancer prevention through innovative strategies for managing OPMD. Sapkota also serves as a co-leader of Working Group 1, which focuses on “Data science and medical informatics to understand OPMD”, within INTERCEPTOR.

The event was financed by INTERCEPTOR.
