Guest lectures: Professor Stephen R Porter and Assistant Professor Gernot Walko
On the occasion of Olav Schreurs’ disputas, the opponents will give two guest lectures.
12.00: Professor Stephen R Porter: "Oral Medicine: Training and clinical activity in the UK”.
Professor Porter, BSc PhD MD FDSRCS FDSRCSEd FHEA, is Director and Professor of Oral Medicine of UCL Eastman Dental Institute. His main clinical interests are the management of immunologically mediated oral mucosal and salivary gland disease, particularly the use of novel immunosuppressive regimes. Professor Porter has published extensively in the field the past 15 years. He is the Programme Director for Special Needs and Special Care Dentistry and Chairman of the Teaching Division of Maxillofacial Surgical and Medical Sciences. On request of professor Janicke Liaaen Jensen, professor Porter will outline the training in Oral Medicine in the UK as the basis for a discussion.
13.00: Lecturer and Assistant Professor Gernot Walko: “Getting under the skin of epidermal tissue homeostasis, repair and cancer”.
Dr. Walko is a molecular biologist, Doctor rerum naturalium from the University of Vienna. His research interest is in epidermal stem cell development with the aim of understanding the normal process of tissue homeostasis as a foundation to understand how these processes go awry in skin diseases, including chronic wound-healing, hyper-inflammatory disorders and cancers. He is presently attached to the University of Bath.
