The Norwegian Fulbright Grant Program

The Norwegian Fulbright program offers a wide range of long- and short-term opportunities for Norwegian citizens to study, conduct research and teach in the United States.

Target Group

For Norwegian Citizens, the US-Norway Fulbright Foundation offers a variety of grants and  special programs to travel for study, research or teaching purposes to the United States. Scholars and students are selected through a rigorous application and interview process and receive a high level of support ranging from visa processing to a comprehensive pre-departure orientation. Fulbright also offers a variety of Summer Institutes for Norwegian teachers and students to study and travel in the U.S. during summer vacation. The Summer Insitutes are organized by the U.S. Department of State. 

US Citizens coming to Norway on a Fulbright exchange program. We organize programs and support throughout the year, including an arrival orientation in August and an annual Fulbright seminar and ski trip in February.

The US-Norway Fulbright Foundation offers Norwegian institutions many options for hosting an American scholar or researcher.  The Intercountry Lecturing Program is a short-term program.  Institutions may also host a traditional Fulbright scholar or researcher for 3-9 months.

Grants for Norwegian Citizens

  • The Norwegian Fulbright program offers a wide range of long- and short-term opportunities for Norwegian citizens to study, conduct research and teach in the United States.
  • The traditional Fulbright program offers grants to Norwegian scholars (postdoc  level) who wish to do research and/or teach in American institutions of higher education or other recognized research institutions.   A special Arctic Chair grant, generously funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is offered to scholars in Arctic Sciences.   Norwegian graduate students (must have BA) are also eligible for Fulbright grants to study at American universities.
  • The US-Norway Fulbright Foundation and the US Department of State offer short-term summer study opportunities to Norwegian secondary school teachers and Norwegian students between the ages 18-22.  These Summer Institutes are five to six week programs at American college and university campuses, including additional travel.

Grants for Norwegian Scholars

  • The Traditional Scholars program offers Norwegian citizens with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in any field the opportunity to do research and/or teach in the U.S. for a period of 3 to 12 months.
  • Norwegian citizens with a Ph.D. in a field focusing on polar and High North issues, and 5-10 years of experience,  are eligible to apply for an Arctic Chair grant.  The Arctic Chair for Norwegian scholars is a seven month grant  to do research and lecture at any accredited U.S. university.  One award is given to a Norwegian scholar each year. 

Grants for Norwegian Graduate Students

  • Fulbright stipends are available for students who will undertake a partial or complete Master or Ph.D. degree in the United States. Students who have already begun their degree at an American university in the United States are not eligible. Stipends for traditional students are available in all disciplines and can be used at any accredited American university. Stipends are only available for students planning a minimum of one academic year study in the United States.
