Strong Presence from the Department of Biomaterials at EuroPerio11 in Vienna
The Department proudly participated in EuroPerio11, held in Vienna in May 2025. As the premier global congress in periodontology and implant dentistry, EuroPerio has firmly established itself as the most important meeting point for clinicians, researchers, and industry professionals working in these fields. The congress, hosted every three years by a new organising committee under the European Federation of Periodontology, continues to grow in size, scope, and scientific impact.
Vienna, regularly ranked among the world’s most liveable cities, offered a fitting backdrop for this landmark event. With its excellent infrastructure, short distances, reliable standards, and high level of service, the city provided an ideal setting for scientific exchange and networking. The congress took place at the Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center, one of Europe’s leading venues for large-scale scientific gatherings.

EuroPerio11 in Numbers:
-
Over 10,000 participants from across the globe
-
A scientific programme featuring more than 150 expert speakers
-
Live surgeries, hands-on workshops, and interactive sessions
-
An extensive industry exhibition showcasing cutting-edge technologies and products
-
More than 1,000 poster presentations covering the latest advances in periodontology and implant research
The Department of Biomaterials substantially contributed to the scientific programme with two oral presentations, reflecting our ongoing commitment to high-impact, interdisciplinary research that bridges fundamental biomaterials science with clinical relevance.
Oral Presentations from UiO:
- "A Poloxamer-Peroxide Formulation Effectively Removes Pellicle and Limits Recontamination"
Angela De Lauretis presented an innovative approach to surface decontamination using a biofilm-targeting formulation. This research has potential clinical relevance for improving the cleaning of implant surfaces in peri-implantitis therapy.
-
"Application of Novel Techniques to Assess Bone-Biomaterial Interactions"
Håvard J. Haugen presented new methodologies for evaluating bone-material interactions using advanced imaging and analytical approaches. The study explored how peptide-enhanced xenografts can mimic natural bone healing environments, with implications for dental and orthopaedicThe applications.
UiO and Partners Join Forces in SHIELD Project to Combat Implant Infections
During the EuroPerio conference in Vienna, representatives from the Department met with colleagues from the University of Lyon, Corticalis AS, and Anthogyr SAS to initiate collaboration in the EU-funded MSCA Doctoral Network project SHIELD (Strategies for Healing Implant-associated Infections and Enhancing Longevity in Devices).
The SHIELD project addresses the critical challenge of implant-associated infections, which compromise the long-term success of medical implants across dentistry, orthopaedics, and otology. By integrating advanced research in biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and translational models, SHIELD aims to develop next-generation antibacterial materials and infection control strategies.
Coordinated by the University of Gothenburg, the project brings together leading institutions and industry partners across Europe, including universities in Cambridge, Dresden, Torino, Dublin, Regensburg, and Barcelona, and companies such as AmiCoat AS, Corticalis AS, Oticon Medical AB, Heraeus Medical GmbH, and Anthogyr SAS.
The Department of Biomaterials is proud to contribute to this ambitious initiative, which also includes training a new generation of interdisciplinary PhD candidates equipped to lead future healthcare innovation.
