Seeing the invisible: How enhanced X-ray imaging reveals the hidden architecture of soft tissues
Soft biological tissues are notoriously difficult to study in three dimensions. By refining contrast-enhanced X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), researchers can now make previously invisible structures accessible for non-destructive, three-dimensional analysis. The approach opens new possibilities for exploring biological tissue without cutting it apart.

Artificial biomaterials can increase bone mass in the jaw
Minh Khai Le Thieu has studied using a synthetic scaffold to promote bone growth after tooth loss in his doctoral thesis. Perhaps this could contribute to the use of a new type of biomaterial? Today, animal bone is widely used to promote bone growth around implants.

Can 3D models with human cells provide new Insights into disease development and treatment?
Being able to research various treatment options without the need to use animals or expose humans to unnecessary treatments is an important goal in medical research. In Maria Schröder's doctoral work at the Faculty of Dentistry, she developed tissue-like 3D models of oral tissues which can help to study the gum disease periodontitis.

Early antibiotic use and prolonged hospitalization in preterm infants: A fresh insight into antibiotic resistance
According to a new publication in Nature Communications, early antibiotics and prolonged hospitalization leave a 'nasopharyngeal microbial scar' in preterm infants. Results underscore the critical role of antibiotic stewardship and infection control within neonatal intensive care units, highlighting the need to balance life-saving antibiotic use with the potential impact on the developing nasopharyngeal microbiome.
