Dental student Leonard Volrath Holmboe traded sleep for synchrotron beamtime at DESY, one of Europe’s most advanced research facilities, to investigate the structure of next-generation putty biomaterials. By mapping the organization of calcium phosphate–hyaluronic acid putties from nanoscale to microscale, the study strengthens the scientific basis for future bone regeneration strategies.

Norway’s leading research institutions recently gathered to strengthen collaborative efforts with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Hosted by the Research Council of Norway, this high-level meeting focused on maximising Norwegian access to advanced synchrotron research techniques—powerful X-ray methods that provide unprecedented insight into materials and biological systems at the atomic scale.

We are thrilled that our team has been awarded a HALRIC pilot project focusing on state-of-the-art X-ray imaging methods for dental and orthopaedic applications. By combining contrast-enhanced micro-CT with advanced synchrotron techniques—such as phase-contrast imaging and X-ray fluorescence mapping—we aim to refine imaging protocols for hard-to-visualize cellular structures in bones, teeth and associated soft tissues.
