Abstract Viruses are a major cause of mortality and socio-economic downfall despite the plethora of biopharmaceuticals designed for their eradication. Conventional antiviral therapies are often ineffective. Live-attenuated vaccines can pose a safety risk due to the possibility of pathogen reversion, whereas inactivated viral vaccines and subunit vaccines do not generate robust and sustained immune responses. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of strategies that combine nanotechnology concepts with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of viral infectious diseases. The present review provides a comprehensive introduction to the different strains of viruses involved in respiratory diseases and presents an overview of recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of viral infections based on nanotechnology concepts and applications. Discussions in diagnostic/therapeutic nanotechnology-based approaches will be focused on H1N1 influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, human parainfluenza virus type 3 infections, as well as COVID-19 infections caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus Delta variant and new emerging Omicron variant. Abstract Cancer, as the leading cause of death worldwide, has been constantly increasing in mortality every year. Among several therapeutics, nanoscale compounds showed promising results in overcoming cancer diseases. There are numerous types of research on the paramagnetic nanoparticles of iron oxide, which cause apoptosis and cancer cell death. In this study, cobalt/zinc/ferrite nanoferrofluid composites (~ 39 nm) were synthesized and decorated with chitosan to enhance the cell entry for potential applications in cancer therapy. The neat and chitosan-adorned cobalt zinc ferrite nanoferrofluid composites (~ 94 nm) displayed superparamagnetic properties. The nanocomposite exhibited anti-cancer activity against WEHI164 cancer cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The chitosan-coated nanocomposite was found to induce oxidative stress in WEHI164 cancer cells, as indicated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Furthermore, DNA damage was indicated in WEHI164 cancer cells after exposure to chitosan-coated nanocomposites. Chitosan-coated nanocomposites promoted dendritic cell maturation by inducing the release of interleukin-6 proinflammatory cytokines. According to the results and ancillary studies, superparamagnetic nanoparticles coated with chitosan can be considered an effective and promising treatment for the destruction of cancer cells. Graphical Abstract Summary: Chitosan decorated cobalt zinc ferrite nanoferrofluid composites was fabricated for potential cancer hyperthermia therapy with high biocompatibility.

Abstract Oxidative damage and infection can prevent or delay tissue repair. Moreover, infection reinforces reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, which makes the wound's condition even worse. Therefore, the need for antioxidant and antibacterial agents is felt for tissue regeneration. There are emerging up‐and‐coming biomaterials that recapitulate both properties into a package, offering an effective solution to turn the wound back into a healing state. In this article, the principles of antioxidant and antibacterial activity are summarized. The review starts with biological aspects, getting the readers to familiarize themselves with tissue barriers against infection. This is followed by the chemistry and mechanism of action of antioxidant and antibacterial materials (dual function). Eventually, the outlook and challenges are underlined to provide where the dual‐function biomaterials are and where they are going in the future. It is expected that the present article inspires the designing of dual‐function biomaterials to more advanced levels by providing the fundamentals and comparative points of view and paving the clinical way for these materials.

Abstract With the promotion of nanochemistry research, large numbers of nanomaterials have been applied in vivo to produce desirable cytotoxic substances in response to endogenous or exogenous stimuli for achieving disease‐specific therapy. However, the performance of nanomaterials is a critical issue that is difficult to improve and optimize under biological conditions. Defect‐engineered nanoparticles have become the most researched hot materials in biomedical applications recently due to their excellent physicochemical properties, such as optical properties and redox reaction capabilities. Importantly, the properties of nanomaterials can be easily adjusted by regulating the type and concentration of defects in the nanoparticles without requiring other complex designs. Therefore, this tutorial review focuses on biomedical defect engineering and briefly discusses defect classification, introduction strategies, and characterization techniques. Several representative defective nanomaterials are especially discussed in order to reveal the relationship between defects and properties. A series of disease treatment strategies based on defective engineered nanomaterials are summarized. By summarizing the design and application of defective engineered nanomaterials, a simple but effective methodology is provided for researchers to design and improve the therapeutic effects of nanomaterial‐based therapeutic platforms from a materials science perspective.

Abstract Critical‐sized bone damage resulting from traumas, fractures, and tumors, impairs the bone tissues' inherent capacity for self‐repair. Conventional therapies could be associated with infection and pain besides demanding additional surgery while being costly. These limitations highlight the paucity of potential unique treatment strategies such as bone tissue engineering. In this study, strontium‐doped mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Sr‐MSN) were successfully synthesized and incorporated into the chitosan/alginate scaffolds which were then freeze‐dried and cross‐linked using CaCl 2 . The physicochemical characteristics of the fabricated scaffolds containing various Sr‐MSN contents were investigated using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The hydrolytic degradation of the scaffolds was decreased with the increase in the Sr‐MSN content while maintaining their water uptake capacity. All fabricated scaffolds showed biocompatibility and Sr‐MSN‐containing scaffolds showed significantly increased Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) cell viability compared to chitosan/alginate scaffold after 72 h. The osteogenic differentiation potential investigations via mineralization assay and alkaline phosphatase enzyme activity indicated that the chitosan/alginate scaffold containing 20% Sr‐MSN showed the highest osteogenic differentiation capacity. Overall, bionanocomposite Cs/Alg/Sr‐MSN scaffolds integrated with desired physicochemical characteristics, biocompatibility, osteogenic differentiation capacity, and drug delivery potential show promising properties for attaining ideal results for bone repair and regeneration applications.

Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) as therapeutic agents have attracted increasing interest in the past decade owing to their significant effectiveness in treating a wide array of ailments. These polymerases II‐derived noncoding RNAs act through post‐transcriptional controlling of different proteins and their allied pathways. Like other areas of medicine, researchers have utilized miRNAs for managing acute and chronic wounds. The increase in the number of patients suffering from either under‐healing or over‐healing wound demonstrates the limited efficacy of the current wound healing strategies and dictates the demands for simpler approaches with greater efficacy. Various miRNA can be designed to induce pathway beneficial for wound healing. However, the proper design of miRNA and its delivery system for wound healing applications are still challenging due to their limited stability and intracellular delivery. Therefore, new miRNAs are required to be identified and their delivery strategy needs to be optimized. In this review, we discuss the diverse roles of miRNAs in various stages of wound healing and provide an insight on the most recent findings in the nanotechnology and biomaterials field, which might offer opportunities for the development of new strategies for this chronic condition. We also highlight the advances in biomaterials and delivery systems, emphasizing their challenges and resolutions for miRNA‐based wound healing. We further review various biovectors (e.g., adenovirus and lentivirus) and abiotic materials such as organic and inorganic nanomaterials, along with dendrimers and scaffolds, as the delivery systems for miRNA‐based wound healing. Finally, challenges and opportunities for translation of miRNA‐based strategies into clinical applications are discussed.

Abstract A proper self‐regenerating capability is lacking in human cardiac tissue which along with the alarming rate of deaths associated with cardiovascular disorders makes tissue engineering critical. Novel approaches are now being investigated in order to speedily overcome the challenges in this path. Tissue engineering has been revolutionized by the advent of nanomaterials, and later by the application of carbon‐based nanomaterials because of their exceptional variable functionality, conductivity, and mechanical properties. Electrically conductive biomaterials used as cell bearers provide the tissue with an appropriate microenvironment for the specific seeded cells as substrates for the sake of protecting cells in biological media against attacking mechanisms. Nevertheless, their advantages and shortcoming in view of cellular behavior, toxicity, and targeted delivery depend on the tissue in which they are implanted or being used as a scaffold. This review seeks to address, summarize, classify, conceptualize, and discuss the use of carbon‐based nanoparticles in cardiac tissue engineering emphasizing their conductivity. We considered electrical conductivity as a key affecting the regeneration of cells. Correspondingly, we reviewed conductive polymers used in tissue engineering and specifically in cardiac repair as key biomaterials with high efficiency. We comprehensively classified and discussed the advantages of using conductive biomaterials in cardiac tissue engineering. An overall review of the open literature on electroactive substrates including carbon‐based biomaterials over the last decade was provided, tabulated, and thoroughly discussed. The most commonly used conductive substrates comprising graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanofibers in cardiac repair were studied.

Abstract Cancer is one of the top life‐threatening dangers to the human survival, accounting for over 10 million deaths per year. Bioactive glasses have developed dramatically since their discovery 50 years ago, with applications that include therapeutics as well as diagnostics. A new system within the bioactive glass family, mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs), has evolved into a multifunctional platform, thanks to MBGs easy‐to‐functionalize nature and tailorable textural properties—surface area, pore size, and pore volume. Although MBGs have yet to meet their potential in tumor treatment and imaging in practice, recently research has shed light on the distinguished MBGs capabilities as promising theranostic systems for cancer imaging and therapy. This review presents research progress in the field of MBG applications in cancer diagnosis and therapy, including synthesis of MBGs, mechanistic overview of MBGs application in tumor diagnosis and drug monitoring, applications of MBGs in cancer therapy ( particularly, targeted delivery and stimuli‐responsive nanoplatforms), and immunological profile of MBG‐based nanodevices in reference to the development of novel cancer therapeutics.
