  Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) are multifunctional lipid mediators that participate in the resolution of inflammation. We have recently described that oral epithelial cells (OECs) express receptors of the SPM resolvin RvD1n-3 DPA and that cultured OECs respond to RvD1n-3 DPA addition by intracellular calcium release, nuclear receptor translocation and transcription of genes coding for antimicrobial peptides. The aim of the present study was to assess the functional outcome of RvD1n-3 DPA–signaling in OECs under inflammatory conditions. To this end, we performed transcriptomic analyses of TNF-a-stimulated cells that were subsequently treated with RvD1n-3 DPA and found significant downregulation of pro-inflammatory nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) target genes. Further bioinformatics analyses showed that RvD1n-3 DPA inhibited the expression of several genes involved in the NF-kB activation pathway. Confocal microscopy revealed that addition of RvD1n-3 DPA to OECs reversed TNF-a-induced nuclear translocation of NF-kB p65. Co-treatment of the cells with the exportin 1 inhibitor leptomycin B indicated that RvD1n-3 DPA increases nuclear export of p65. Taken together, our observations suggest that SPMs also have the potential to be used as a therapeutic aid when inflammation is established.

  Objectve Several pre-cementation procedures have been advocated to enhance adhesion between zirconia and resin-based cement. There is, however, limited documentation on how these pre-treatments affect the strength of zirconia crowns as most tests are performed on discs or bars. The aim was to assess the effect of pre-cementation procedures on fracture mode, fracture strength and cement retention on zirconia. Methods Two dental zirconia materials with different yttria content were assessed (<4 and>5 mol%). Both discs (n = 45) and crown-shaped specimens (n = 30) of the two materials were pretreated with either air-abrasion or hot-etching with KHF2 and compared with untreated controls with regards to surface roughness, crystallography, wettability, cement adhesion and fracture strength. Results and Significance Air-abrasion improves adhesion and strength of zirconia with moderate yttria content (<4 mol%). Acid etching with heated KHF2 showed the best effect on strength and cement retention on zirconia with higher yttria content (>5 mol%). Application of KHF2 was, however, complicated on crown-shaped specimens. Pre-treatment and cementation protocols should be optimized for different dental zirconias to improve both strength and retention.   The present study used a new, digitized version of the impression replica technique, namely the dual‐scan technique, to evaluate the adaptation of single‐crown fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). Scans of the bare master model and of the master model with a silicone layer representing the cement layer were superimposed and analyzed using designated software. Single crowns produced using the lost‐wax metal casting technique were included. The cement space of the band width, 0.5–1.0 mm from the preparation margin (marginal fit), was smallest for crowns made from laser‐sintered cobalt‐chromium. The internal fit in both mesial‐distal and buccal‐palatal directions was statistically significantly better for crowns made using the conventional lost‐wax metal casting technique than for crowns produced using computer‐aided design/computer‐aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). Fixed dental prostheses produced by milled cobalt‐chromium had the loosest internal fit. The results agree with those of our previous study of the same test specimens, in which the triple‐scan method was used, and imply that the dual‐scan method is well suited for adaptation studies.

  Objective: A 2-month randomized clinical trial (RCT) study comparing electric and manual toothbrushes used by residents in nursing homes showed significant reduction in plaque score for both groups. The aim of this follow up study was to study if the effect sustained in a longer perspective when toothbrushes were used according to resident’s own preference. Materials and methods: One year after baseline of the RCT-study, 100 participants were re-examined. The simplified oral hygiene index (OHI-S) was used as outcome measure on dental plaque. Results: The mean age was 86.6, 78.1% had three or more medical diagnoses and 52.2% had moderate to severe cognitive impairment. The mean number of natural teeth was 18.8. After 1 year, mean plaque scores was significantly reduced within the population, from 1.2 to 0.7 (p < .001). A total of 46 participants preferred to use an electric toothbrush and 54 preferred manual. No significant difference in plaque score was found between electric and manual toothbrushes. Conclusion: After 1 year, the improvement in dental hygiene from the RCT study sustained for users of both electric and manual toothbrush. Focus upon tooth brushing seems to be efficient and both manual and electric toothbrushes should be available in nursing homes.

  Abstract Aims The aims of the study were to investigate benefits and challenges in implementing a digital examination and study the clinical relevance of the digital examination in relation to clinical training and practice. Material and method The study was based on semi‐structured focus‐group interviews from two distinct student populations (2016 and 2017) in a bachelor programme in dental hygiene. In addition, conversational data from a plenary discussion from the whole second student population (2017) were collected and analysed. The data were approached on basis of content analysis. Results A benefit experienced in the digital examination was the ease in typing and editing answers on the computer. This suggests an increased effectiveness in computer‐based compared to analogue examinations. An additional advantage was the experienced relevance of the examination related to the clinic. This finding refers not only to the digital presentations of images, but also to the entire setting in the clinic and dental practice. The limitations reported by the students were non‐optimal viewing conditions for presenting radiographic images and difficulties in obtaining an overview of the assignments compared to paper‐based examinations due to the linear digital examination format. The last finding on lacking overview revealed an influence on student performances which should be taken seriously in designing digital examinations. Conclusion In conclusion, the digital layout increases efficiency and clinical relevance of examinations to a certain extent. Obstacles were found in limitations related to image presentation and lack of overview of the examination. The latter challenge raises questions related to developing suitable assessment software.

  Suboptimal adaptation of fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) can lead to technical and biological complications. It is unclear if the computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technique improves adaptation of FDPs compared with FDPs made using the lost-wax and metal casting technique. Three-unit FDPs were manufactured by CAD/CAM based on digital impression of a typodont model. The FDPs were made from one of five materials: pre-sintered zirconium dioxide; hot isostatic pressed zirconium dioxide; lithium disilicate glass-ceramic; milled cobalt-chromium; and laser-sintered cobalt-chromium. The FDPs made using the lost-wax and metal casting technique were used as reference. The fit of the FDPs was analysed using the triple-scan method. The fit was evaluated for both single abutments and three-unit FDPs. The average cement space varied between 50 μm and 300 μm. Insignificant differences in internal fit were observed between the CAD/CAM-manufactured FDPs, and none of the FPDs had cement spaces that were statistically significantly different from those of the reference FDP. For all FDPs, the cement space at a marginal band 0.5–1.0 mm from the preparation margin was less than 100 μm. The milled cobalt-chromium FDP had the closest fit. The cement space of FDPs produced using the CAD/CAM technique was similar to that of FDPs produced using the conventional lost-wax and metal casting technique.

  BACKGROUND: The nature of differences in the timing of tooth formation between ethnic groups is important when estimating age. AIM: To calculate age of transition of the mandibular third (M3) molar tooth stages from archived dental radiographs from sub-Saharan Africa, Malaysia, Japan and two groups from London UK (Whites and Bangladeshi). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The number of radiographs was 4555 (2028 males, 2527 females) with an age range 10-25 years. The left M3 was staged into Moorrees stages. A probit model was fitted to calculate mean ages for transitions between stages for males and females and each ethnic group separately. The estimated age distributions given each M3 stage was calculated. To assess differences in timing of M3 between ethnic groups, three models were proposed: a separate model for each ethnic group, a joint model and a third model combining some aspects across groups. The best model fit was tested using Bayesian and Akaikes information criteria (BIC and AIC) and log likelihood ratio test. RESULTS: Differences in mean ages of M3 root stages were found between ethnic groups, however all groups showed large standard deviation values. The AIC and log likelihood ratio test indicated that a separate model for each ethnic group was best. Small differences were also noted between timing of M3 between males and females, with the exception of the Malaysian group. These findings suggests that features of a reference data set (wide age range and uniform age distribution) and a Bayesian statistical approach are more important than population specific convenience samples to estimate age of an individual using M3. CONCLUSION: Some group differences were evident in M3 timing, however, this has some impact on the confidence interval of estimated age in females and little impact in males because of the large variation in age.

  BACKGROUND: For children with disputed date of birth, age assessments based on skeletal and dental development are recommended. AIM: The aim of this retrospective study was to compare and contrast the results of age assessments from these two methods performed on unaccompanied asylum seeking children in Norway. In addition the aim of the analysis was to see if the skeletal age assessment from hand-wrist was operator sensitive. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Age assessments performed from January 2010 to December 2014 were analysed. Skeletal development of hand-wrist was graded according to Greulich and Pyle (1959). Dental development of the wisdom teeth was scored on orthopantomograms according to Moorrees, Fanning and Hunt (1963) and age assessed from tables published by Liversidge (2008) and Haavikko (1970). In the statistical analysis agreement between the two age assessments was defined according to the asylum seeker's age being assessed to be older or younger than 18 years. The statistical analysis included 3333 boys and 486 girls. RESULTS: The agreement was 83% for boys and 79% for girls. Approximately 70% of the boys and girls were 18 years or older by both methods. It was more common that the skeletal age was assessed older than 18 years and dental age younger than 18 years for both genders. It could be demonstrated that the age assessment based on skeletal maturation was not operator sensitive. CONCLUSION: The analyses demonstrate that there is good agreement between the two age assessments, but a method to combine the results would increase the reliability of the age assessments.

  Introduction Post-exam feedback aims to provide students with insight into their performances and enable them to identify knowledge gaps to guide further learning. According to a survey, giving post-exam feedback is mandatory in half of the responding universities in Europe. The aim of this study was to assess dental hygienist students’ perceptions of their learning gains from post-exam sessions in a university with (Umea) and without (Oslo) mandatory post-exam feedback and to compare differences in arrangements with the purpose of improving the quality of post-exam feedback. Materials and Methods The sessions were carried out among dental hygienist students from Umea University, Sweden and from University of Oslo, Norway. The post-exam feedback in Umea was given simultaneously with the exam results, while the session in Oslo was held after the students had received their results. The study was based on a qualitative approach, with two student focus group interviews conducted in each study context (Umea, n=13/Oslo, n=5). All the interviews were led by an unbiased external researcher. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, and a content analysis was performed to identify patterns in participant experiences and perceptions. The teachers subjective experience and thoughts of the activity will be reported. Results (Preliminary) Students from both contexts, with and without previous experience, appreciated the post-exam feedback, citing the learning benefits by clearing up uncertainties and revealing knowledge gaps and misconceptions. Students from Umea reported a somewhat stressful experience having simultaneously received their grades and during the feedback session, a tension that was not reported in Oslo. Most students suggested that the post-exam feedback sessions should always be carried out and last longer. Conclusions Post-exam feedback appears to support student learning. The reported learning outcomes depend on how the session is organized and this requires further investigation.

  Objectives: To investigate oral complaints and findings in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients who had received radiotherapy and compare them with controls. Methods: As part of a larger study, 30 HNC patients (14 female, age 64.2±9.6y) and 26 age- and sex-matched controls (13 female, 62.9±12.9y, p=0.850) were examined at the Dry Mouth Clinic, Faculty of Dentistry, Oslo. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) was assessed using the short form Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14: high score-low OHRQoL). Self-reported dysgeusia (yes/no) and sense of taste (10-point VAS: high score-good smell sense) were recorded. Taste scores were recorded using taste strips (high score-good taste function). Oral candida counts were determined from cheek and tongue swabs (0=no growth, 1=minimal, 2=moderate, 3=severe). Volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) in mouth air samples were determined by gas chromatography and related to perceptive threshold-levels (H2S≤112ppb, CH3SH≤26ppb). Between-group comparisons were performed using Mann-Whitney U test and Chi-square test. Results: The HNC patients reported significantly poorer OHRQoL than controls (OHIP sum-score: 18.4±12.4 vs 1.2±2.0, p<0.001). They reported significantly poorer sense of taste compared to controls (6.4±2.4 vs 7.8±1.9, p=0.018), and more often dysgeusia (26.7% vs 7.7%, p=0.087). The measured gustatory scores (20.4±6.4 vs 22.3±4.6, p=0.315) were similar for both groups. Candida scores were significantly higher in the patient group (1.6±1.3 vs 0.7±0.9, p=0.024). The percentage of HNC patients who had oral H2S above the threshold level was significantly lower than for the controls (0% vs 27%, p<0.05). This was not the case for CH3SH (5.5% vs 27%, p=0.105). Conclusion: After radiotherapy, these HNC patients experienced negative oral consequences of the treatment. They reported poorer OHRQoL, and had reduced taste sensation and higher oral candida counts. However, the underlying reason for less problems with halitosis in HNC patients than in controls is worth further exploration.

  Abstract: It is a well-known fact that assessment is an important driver for student learning. In the advancement of digital technologies, the question is how digital resources can be used to improve formative and summative assessment in ways that support student learning as well as ensuring knowledge standards for future dental professionals. Two experimental studies on digital assessment have been conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Oslo. Firstly, digitized formative assessment based on Multiple Choice questionnaires (MCQ) was implemented in testing students’ knowledge from prior parts of their education. Secondly, a pilot-study of a digitized summative assessment in oral radiology was conducted to identify benefits and challenges in applying entirely digital based exams. Results from these experiments are presented and discussed in relation to research on assessment and student learning.

  The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between saliva secretion, halitosis and oral health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Informed consent was obtained from 65 participants including 24 patients with primary Sjögren’s Syndrome (pSS, 53±12y), 17 patients with dry eyes and dry mouth not fulfilling the classification for pSS (non-SS-sicca, 53±11y), and 24 healthy controls (49±11y). Unstimulated (UWS) and stimulated (SWS) whole saliva secretion rates were recorded as low (hyposalivation: SWS <0.7 ml/min, UWS <0.1 ml/min) or normal (SWS >0.7 ml/min, UWS >0.1 ml/min). Volatile sulfur compounds (VSC: hydrogen sulphide-H2S, methylmercaptan-CH3SH) in mouth air were measured by gas chromatography. HRQoL was assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14). Mann-Whitney test was used in data analysis (p<0.05). In general, for UWS, subjects with hyposalivation had significantly higher mean CH3SH-levels than those with normal salivation (27.339.3 vs 9.913.6 ppb). For SWS, subjects with hyposalivation had significantly higher mean H2S-levels (184.5464.8 vs 43.964.1 ppb) and CH3SH-levels (27.237.4 vs 6.58.9 ppb). Within the non-SS patient group, those with hyposalivation had significantly higher H2S-levels than those with normal salivation. In general, there were no significant differences in OHIP-scores based on VSC levels. However, within the non-SS group, those with high H2S-levels (>112 ppb) reported significantly more often that they had “difficulties relaxing due to oral problems”, and that “life has been less satisfactory due to oral problems”, than those with low H2S-levels (<112 ppb). In conclusion, hyposalivation was generally associated with increased levels of oral VSC, indicating oral malodour. Surprisingly, patients with dry eyes and dry mouth who did not fulfill the classification for pSS seemed to be more affected in their daily life than patients who fulfilled the criteria.

  The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence, distribution and severity of dental erosive wear among 16-year old adolescents living in Troms. Clinical, intra-oral pictures of 392 individuals involved in the «Tromsø undersøkelsen, Fit Futures» were evaluated for dental erosive wear by three previously calibrated examiners. A tested erosive wear system (VEDE) was used. More than one third of the adolescents (38 %) had dental erosive wear, 18 % in enamel only and 20 % involving dentine. The palatal surfaces of upper central incisors and first lower molars were the most affected. Of those 148 (38 %) individuals registered with dental erosive wear, 93 % had cuppings, usually on first lower molars (73 %), and on the mesio-buccal cusp (75 %). Males had significantly more erosive lesions and more lesions into dentine compared with females (p<0,001). Dental erosive wear is a common condition among 16-year-olds in Troms, and an important focus for dental health personnel should be early diagnosis and information on preventive strategies related to dental erosive wear.
