Dyreforsøk og etikk The use of animals in research raises many ethical questions, particularly if the experiment is likely to cause pain or suffering to an animal that does not need the treatment or procedure to which it is exposed. Current legislation imposes a clear obligation on all those involved in animal research to conduct a cost/benefit study before undertaking such work. The principles behind modern laboratory animal science and welfare will be discussed.

Alternativer til dyreforsøk Researchers who plan experiments that may involve the use of animals are obliged under Norwegian and European law to use alternatives to animals if this is possible. It is the researcher's responsibility to document that a search for alternatives has been carried out. The concept of Alternatives is summarised in "The Three R's" of Russell & Burch: Replacement, Reduction and Refinement. Examples will be given of these three types of alternative.
