SmileSmart AI: An Artificial Intelligence-Based Learning Assistant

Background and Rationale for the Project

We need competence development and training to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) effectively, as well as experience sharing and knowledge exchange. This project aims to investigate how and to what extent Generative AI (Gen AI) in the form of large language models (LLM) can function as a learning assistant.

Students in selected course at the Faculty of Dentistry will have access to an assistant based on AI technology (e.g., UiO's chatGPT which is GDPR compliant) and a model trained on the relevant curriculum and tailored to run on local university hardware.

Goals and Desired Outcomes

  • Achieving a better understanding of how to create a learning assistant using LLMs with a focus on how such an assistant affects and conditions students' learning opportunities and teachers' teaching repertoires.

  • Helping students utilize such technology to enhance their learning.

  • Encouraging students to develop critical reflection around using such technology to enhance their learning.

  • Supporting experience exchange across UiO faculties and increasing the usefulness of such exchanges, for instance, using this project as a basis for creating similar learning assistants in other subjects.

Timeline

The project consists of three phases:

  • Fall semester 2024: Development and testing of prototypes and possible improvements.

  • Spring semester and fall semester 2025: Integration of the lear

ning assistant in regular teaching in two courses at the Faculty of Dentistry; course evaluation focusing on the use of the learning assistant.

  • Fall semester 2025: Experience exchange and dissemination of results focused on enhanced teaching quality; activities focusing on 1) increasing transfer value across faculties and 2) competence building among teachers
