Orthodontics is a speciality within dentistry, that deals with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. The word derives from the Greek words "ortho", meaning straight, and "odont", meaning tooth.
The Department of Orthodontics is responsible for pre- and postgraduate education and clinical training as well as teaching of related academic subjects. This includes the biological and anatomical basis of craniofacial and dental development. The education is based on the research activities performed in the Department and elsewhere that are relevant for the required competence. The Department also serves as a competence centre on a regional and national level.
In order to fulfil these obligations, the Department runs both a pre- and a postgraduate orthodontic clinic for the treatment of patients. The consultations amount to more than 7000 per year. Simultaneously, a continuous training of our administrative and technical staff takes place. For research purposes, our archives of scientific data documenting normal development and treatment effects, and which have been collected over many years, now serve as reference materials. In addition to being a valuable data base for ongoing research projects, these materials also attract guest researchers, and this has resulted in several international collaborative projects.
The mission is to educate and train dental students and dentists to obtain a professional competence that will meet and fulfil the needs of the Norwegian society, and to disseminate important research findings to the laity and the professional community nationally and internationally.
