Focus areas

The number of full-time scientists in the department is relatively low. However, due to previous and current adjunct professors, many international collaboration projects, a large number of postgraduates and Ph.D. students, research activity is comprehensive. Nevertheless, research topics have over the last years been focused mainly on craniofacial development and treatment of specific skeletal and dentoalveolar anomalies.

Craniofacial development

- Craniofacial development in 6 – 18 years and adulthood
- Dental maturation
- Effects of feeding, diet and habits on dentofacial development

Orthodontic treatment

Skeletal anomalies

- Long-term stability after orthognathic surgical treatment
- Orthognathic surgery and pharyngeal morphology
- Treatment of patients with cleft-lip-palate and juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Dentoalveolar anomalies

- Extraction treatment and stability
- Tissue reactions related to orthodontic movement
- Bonding materials in orthodontics
- Preventive measures during orthodontic treatment
- Tooth transplantation in orthodontic treatment
- Treatment approaches to missing anterior teeth in growing individuals
- Bone grafting to maxillary clefts and long-term prognosis for anterior teeth
- Indications for and provision of orthodontic treatment
- Consumer satisfaction
- Long-term effect of untreated malocclusion
