Merits at the Department of Biomaterials

The Department of Biomaterials has succeeded in attracting considerable funding and acknowledgment over the last ten years with a cumulative funding of 15 million Euros. The department has coordinated several EU and nationally founded project on various type o application from novel bone grafts, implant surface coatings, debridement strategies for infected implants, dental membrane, degradable metals, biomolecule for improved bone healing, soft tissue grafts and others. 

We are currently involved in three funded H2020 EU projects and three national funded. Here is a small summary:

We are participating in BiomatDB -funded by the European Union under the  Horizon 2020 Framework Program- Coordination and Support Action (CSA) Grant.  The goal is to create of a database of biomaterials, providing detailed information on the chemical-physical, biological and toxicological properties accessible to a wide variety of end-users, e.g. researchers, companies and clinicians, to evaluate the biological and clinical usefulness also in the areas beyond their intended primary applications. The project has 14 different partners and has received  50 million NOK in funding.

The  EXCITE  project is a European infrastructure initiative for scientists working on unravelling the secrets of Earth materials by using some of the world’s best electron and X-ray imaging facilities. The EXCITE Network makes leading-edge research facilities accessible to all scientists. The project is coordinator by University of Utrecht, where the other partners at UiO are Luca Menegon, Magnus Hovland  and Håvard Haugen, 

Our scientists are working together on the EEA funded project: «Waste-to-Resource: Eggshells as a Source for Next-Generation Biomaterials for Bone Regeneration». Millions of chicken eggshells are thrown into the garbage yearly, which could be a valuable raw material for producing next-generation biomaterials. New solutions that will allow eggshells to be recycled into biomaterials for bone regeneration are within reach due to the collaboration of scientists from Riga Technical University (RTU)University of Oslo, Reykjavik University, Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech). The project is led by Dagnija Loča, Head of RTU Rudolfs Cimdins Riga Biomaterials Innovation and Development Centre.

InjecTE is a multidisciplinary project assembling international leading researchers (Prof. Ruis Reis/ Prof Manuela Gomes, 3Bs  University of Minho, and Prof. Kerstin Galler, University Regensburg)  aiming at developing and testing new advanced biomaterials for periodontal and endodontic regeneration.  Funding is from Norwegian Research Council.

BioNaNOR is a project to develop materials to restore dermal function partners in the project is  Prof João Mano, University of Aveiro and Prof. Jonny Blaker, University of Manchester. The BioNaNOR project aims at using a dermis-matrix-mimicking hydrogel based on nano-layered and chemically modified chitosan. The funding is from Norwegian Research Council.

LUTHER is a  Young Research Talents project funded by RCN where Hanna Tiainen is the PI. In this interdisciplinary research project, we focus on developing and thoroughly characterising a bioinspired surface modification strategy based on substrate-independent surface polymerisation of tannic acid, an antioxidant and antibacterial plant polyphenol, to tackle biomaterial-associated infections. Project partners from Denmark, Portugal and the US.

Furthermore, the department is and cooperating closely with university academics in the US, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and France. On average the past ten years we publish around 20 papers and produces 2 PhD a year (as seen below). Several of our researchers  have long experience in working with industrial partners (Dentsply Sirona and Straumann) e.g. large industrial development of new dental implant surfaces has been carried out by researchers at the department.
